On November 4, game developer SCONEC launched Bubble Bobble for Kakao. Bubble Bobble is a retro arcade game that was first released in 1986 by Taito. In this action-platform game, the player travels through various stages as the main character, the baby dinosaur. Since it’s first release, the game became very popular with its cute dinosaur characters and graphics, simple, yet addictive rules, and catchy BGM, all of which brings back childhood memories of arcade games for many users.
Bubble Bobble for Kakao is SCONEC’s first mobile game. SCONEC, first established back in 2002, is a game developer and publisher that mainly focuses on console games like Nintendo Wii, PlayStations, and XBox. It also partners with other game developer and publishers like Nintendo, Sega, and Korean companies like KBS Media and YBM to introduce different types of games to the Korean market. Along with its long-term partnership with Taito, the original developer of Bubble Bobble, and the demand and popularity for Kakao mobile games, SCONEC made a strategic move of redeveloping a nostalgic game for Kakao.
The original publisher, Taito, released various spin-offs and sequels of Bubble Bobble, as well as computer and game console versions throughout the years to meet the demands of one billion users worldwide. After about two decades since its original version, the game is now available on mobile devices, specifically via Kakao Talk, a popular instant messaging service.
At first, the graphics and overall visuals of the game remains retro, just like the original version. But the mobile version tweaked the colors and added new features to the game. It is harder to clear each stage, yet the main strategy remains the same. The baby dinosaur shoots bubbles to capture the enemies and then bursts the bubble. By collecting different items throughout each stages, the main character has higher chance of defeating the enemies. The Kakao version also added the pet feature, which helps the player collect diamonds during the stages and receive higher score. Also, the game connects with the user’s Kakao contacts to share or compare scores with friends.

EuJin Sohn, the VP of SCONEC, expressed his gratitude for such high level of interest among the public. With about hundred thousand people who have pre-ordered the game, the company is hopeful that Bubble Bobble will be loved by both those who have played it in the past and those who have not. The company is currently running the launch promotions, giving out limited edition of the Bubble Bobble Mini Game console, Kakao Talk emoticons, Golden Dinosaur Eggs for the game, and much more.
