Naver Labs announced that it is acquiring Epipolar, a 3D technology company, in order to strengthen its 3D mapping technology used in AR/VR service and 3D content production.
Established in 2015, Epipolar has been widely acknowledged as the best in its field in Korea. The company has participated in the Seoul 3D spatial information system advancement project, and developed 3D spatial information system based on WebGL for the first time in the country. Furthermore, it provides 3D mapping information and a visual search engine through which one can find POI information of a specific building from its photograph.
Naver Labs will acquire 100% of Epipolar’s share, thereby improving its AR/VR, internal maps and 3D contents production technology. On top of 3D contents of Naver Maps, 3D technology is expected to make positive contribution to current research projects such as automated driving and robotics.
Naver Labs CEO and Naver CTO Song ChangHyeon said, “Epipolar’s 3D technology will form a synergy with a variety of future technologies, and we expect it to take Naver Labs technology a step further.” He added, “Naver Labs will continue to strengthen its intelligence technology in living space and form more partnerships to enable a higher degree of synergy.”
Naver Labs became an independent company from Naver’s research department this January. It develops products and services based on ambient intelligence technology, which can provide necessary service beforehand by recognizing user’s situation.
