KT (Chairman Hwang Chang-kyu) announced on the 27th that it succeeded in linking 5G terminal of Samsung Electronics in compliance with ‘5G standard of Pyeongchang’ to KT’s 5G demonstration network at main stadium and the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games opening meeting on the 27th.
In addition, KT succeeded in demonstrating the 5G service, which transmits large-capacity video by connecting the 5G pilot network of KT with the 5G terminal of Samsung Electronics. This is the first time a real terminal, not a test device, has been connected to a 5G network and delivered as the service.
The 5G terminal used by KT and Samsung Electronics takes a form of a tablet PC and can operate basic functions provided by existing smart terminals and ultra high-speed wireless data communication through the 5G connection. In addition, 5G-4G (LTE) multi-RAT interworking function is installed in this terminal, so users can use high-speed data communication service between 4G and 5G network.
KT has been working with Samsung Electronics in connection with 5G R&D center and Pyeong Chang 5G center for the past several months to connect the 5G terminal with 5G test network built in PyeongChang. The successful development of 5G commercialization technology has reached its final stage.
“The world’s first 5G network in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, which attracts the world’s attention, was made possible by Korea’s technological prowess and leading investment in ICT,” said KT Network Division President Oh Sung Mok. “We aim to showcase a variety of amazing 5G services to the world, and will continue to prepare for the rest of the year. “
